Prelude | Worship Band
Every Mother Every Father

Every mother, every father
Called to raise up sons or daughters
May your heart be patient
May your mind be clear
May our God be with you and calm your fears

Song | Worship Band
Psalm 126

Our mouths, they were filled, filled with laughter
Our tongues, they were loosed, loosed with joy
Restore us, O Lord! Restore us, O Lord!

Although we are weeping
Lord help us keep sowing
The seeds of Your Kingdom
For the day You will reap them!
Your sheaves we will carry
Lord, please do not tarry!
All those who sow weeping
Will go out with songs of joy!

The nations will say,“He has done great things!”
The nations will sing songs of joy
Restore us, O Lord! Restore us, O Lord!

Invocation

We step away from our labors, oh Lord, and come to worship; for In You, Father, Son, and Spirit, we find rest.

Gather us in, near and far, and restore us in Your presence.

Strengthen us through the ministry of Your word; nourish us at your table.

Fill, and send us forth to scatter good news wherever we go.

In Christ we pray, Amen.

Responsive Scripture Reading | Psalm 126

When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion,
we were like those who dreamed.
Our mouths were filled with laughter,
our tongues with songs of joy.
Then it was said among the nations,
“The Lord has done great things for them.”
The Lord has done great things for us,
and we are filled with joy.

Restore our fortunes, Lord,
    like streams in the Negev.
Those who sow with tears
will reap with songs of joy.
Those who go out weeping,
    carrying seed to sow,
will return with songs of joy,
    carrying sheaves with them.

Call to Confession

In his time of trouble, the Psalmist recalls God’s faithfulness in the past. He remembers how the Lord restored them; he remembers their laughter and joy. With this in mind, he calls on God to restore them again. The Psalmist remembers, but how often we forget. We are preoccupied by the cares of the present, anxieties about the future, or regret about our past, but God has done great things for us in Jesus Christ—he has redeemed our past, secured our future, and is with us, even now. Come, let us kneel before Him and confess our sins.

Prayer of Confession

Lord, You have done great things for us, indeed. No past or future failing, no present struggle, may overcome the joy You have secured for us through the death and resurrection of Your son. Forgive us, for we are too small-minded to remember or to hope. Our memories are filled with bitterness; we imagine our future with despair. Trouble, worry, the desire for other things, choke out Your work in our lives. Restore us; by Your Holy Spirit call us back to the joy set before us in Christ. In his name we pray, Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

Friends, anyone who in Christ is a new creation! The old has gone, the new has come and all this is from God.

Hear the good news, in Jesus Christ you are forgiven.

Passing the Peace

May the peace of the Lord be with you.

Response: And also with you

Song | Worship Band

Affirmation of Faith | Apostles Creed

We believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. We believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Proclamation of the Word | Pastor David Dunderdale

Mark 4:1-20
Again Jesus began to teach by the lake. The crowd that gathered around him was so large that he got into a boat and sat in it out on the lake, while all the people were along the shore at the water’s edge. 2 He taught them many things by parables, and in his teaching said: 3 “Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, some multiplying thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times.”

9 Then Jesus said, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”

10 When he was alone, the Twelve and the others around him asked him about the parables. 11 He told them, “The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you. But to those on the outside everything is said in parables12 so that,

“‘they may be ever seeing but never perceiving,
    and ever hearing but never understanding;
otherwise they might turn and be forgiven!’”

13 Then Jesus said to them, “Don’t you understand this parable? How then will you understand any parable? 14 The farmer sows the word. 15 Some people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them.16 Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy. 17 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away.18 Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; 19 but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful. 20 Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop—some thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times what was sown.”

Prayers of Thanksgiving & Intercession

Would you like to share a prayer request? Submit your request here.

(As you pray the following petitions, you are encouraged to pause and lift to the Lord particular concerns or people or events. Read prayer requests from Blacknall members and ministry partners here.)

Lord, You promise through your prophet Isaiah, that your word goes forth and will not return empty; it will accomplish what you desire (Is. 55:11).

Thank you for sending the Word made flesh (John 1:1), Jesus Christ; we praise You for what He has accomplished.

We pray that your Word would bear fruit in our lives; we pray for a harvest of righteousness in our congregation, in Your church in Durham, and in Your church throughout the world.

Help us all to sow the seed of Your good news freely—and with joy. We pray especially for those who have the particular vocation to be missionaries of your gospel.

Strengthen us all and help us to be diligent in our worship and our work, whatever our vocation.

We remember today that each of us comes into this world as a part of a family, and we thank you for mothers, through whom You have given us life. Help us to honor them, in relationship or in memory; help us to respond to Jesus’ call to be mothers and sisters and brothers in His new family by doing God’s will.

Comfort those who are weeping now, especially the poor and the needy, the sick and those who grieve.

Shield those who are joyous.

We pray together, as You taught us.…

The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever.
Amen.

Songs of Response | Worship Band & Congregation
We Will Feast in the House of Zion

We will feast in the house of Zion
We will sing with our hearts restored
He has done great things, we will say together
We will feast and weep no more

We will not be burned by the fire
He is the Lord our God
We are not consumed, by the flood
Upheld, protected, gathered up

In the dark of night, before the dawn
My soul, be not afraid
For the promised morning, oh how long?
Oh God of Jacob, be my strength

Every vow we've broken and betrayed
You are the Faithful one
And from the garden to the grave
Bind us together, bring shalom

Our Great God

Eternal God, unchanging, mysterious, and unknown
Your boundless love, unfailing, in grace and mercy shown
Bright seraphim in endless flight around Your glorious throne
They raise their voices day and night in praise to You alone

Hallelujah! Glory be to our great God!
Hallelujah! Glory be to our great God!

Lord, we are weak and frail, helpless in the storm
Surround us with Your angels, hold us in Your arms
Our cold and ruthless enemy, his pleasure is our harm
Rise up, O Lord, and he will flee before our sovereign God

Let every creature in the sea, and every flying bird
Let every mountain, every field, and valley of the earth
Let all the moons and all the stars in all the universe
Sing praises to the living God, who rules them by His Word
